The patent pending SpanLite is a combination power line marker and obstruction light. Made of aluminum, Spanlite can be installed on powered lines rated up to 250° C (482° F) and 500KV.
The two LED obstruction lights meet FAA & ICAO standards, drawing 50 Amps from the live line to produce 32.5 candela each. Ideally suited to river or canyon crossings, SpanLite markers can be installed by helicopter.
SpanLite markers are based on the same design and technology found in our industry standard SpanGuard markers. For over 50 years, SpanGuard markers from P&R Technologies have been saving lives and protecting valuable power lines by making them visible to low flying aircraft. Because of their durable construction, easy installation, and "line friendly" performance, SpanGuard markers have been chosen by over 600 utilities, and all are repeat customers. See the SpanGuard User List.
The FAA advises the use of steady red lighted markers with a minimum intensity of 32.5 candela on transmission line catenary wires near airports, heliports, across rivers, canyons, lakes, etc. The lighted markers should be installed on the highest energized line. If they are installed on a lower line (not more than 20 ft. away from the highest line), 36" markers such as our SpanGuard markers should be installed on the highest line. See the FAA Advisory for Markers and Catenary Lighting.
For most applications, 12" SpanLite markers in international orange are used. If needed, 36" SpanGuard markers are also installed on the top line. SpanLite is also available by special order in 24" and 36" diameters in international orange, white, or yellow.
The two sealed, steady red LED obstruction lights used in SpanLite markers require 50 Amps (2,000 Amps maximum) to continuously generate 32.5 candela each. No separate power source is needed, making SpanLite well suited to remote locations where costly and less reliable solar towers might otherwise be needed. The LED technology ensures a long operating life of many years with little or no maintenance. Flashing LED lights and other colors are available.
SpanLite markers are rated up to 250° C (482° F) and 500KV on ACSS lines, where plastic or fiberglass markers can melt or burn. Made from aluminum, SpanGuard AL markers are also lightweight. The 12" SpanLite weighs just 26 pounds.
SpanLite markers are straightforward to install from a bucket and can be installed by helicopter when necessary. The lower half of the marker is installed on the line first, then the upper half is attached. The conductor runs directly through the center of the marker and the internal transformer. Rugged clamps hold the SpanLite in place. To further protect the line, spiral preform armor rods are recommended under the clamps.
SpanLite markers are made-to-order, and utilities should order 8–12 weeks in advance of installation, or longer during the peak summer season or for special orders.
